Tips For Good Oral Hygiene At Home

An oral hygiene routine is a set of practices that help keep your mouth clean and healthy. There are numerous good oral hygiene practices that can help you keep your teeth and gums healthy. They include:

Brush and Floss Properly

Brushing and flossing are vital parts of maintaining your oral health, but it can be difficult to master the proper technique. At Smiles Ahead Family Dentistry, we educate our patients on the proper way to brush and floss their teeth at home. We may also recommend certain products for certain patients.

Try to make time to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Many dentists agree that this is the minimum amount of time you should be spending removing plaque from the surface of the teeth every day. If you can, try to brush after every meal as well. If you cannot brush after a meal, make sure to rinse with water or mouthwash to remove food debris from the teeth.

Flossing is an important step for preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Choose a brand of floss that is gentle on the teeth and use it to clean in between each set of teeth once a day. To clean between your teeth, gently glide the floss up and down around the sides of the teeth and along the gum line. Be careful not to snap the floss against your teeth, as this could cause damage.

Use Soft-bristled Toothbrush

We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head. The head of the toothbrush should fit comfortably inside your mouth, and the bristles should not be so dense that they cause irritation or injury to the gums. You should replace your brush every three to four months or when it begins to show signs of wear.

Eating a Balanced Diet

A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can help promote good dental health and prevent the development of certain oral diseases. In particular, fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C and calcium are necessary for healthy teeth and gums.

Using Mouthwash As Needed

Your dentist may recommend using an alcohol-free oral rinse or spray after brushing and flossing to freshen your breath and remove bacteria that can cause cavities and gum disease. Most mouthwash products have an expiration date, so be sure to use them before that date passes! Rinse your mouth for at least 30 seconds after swishing it around. This amount of time will help reduce plaque buildup. Rinsing your mouth with water after you brush and floss can also help clean your teeth and decrease your risk of cavities.

Reducing Your Sugar Intake

Sugar can be a major cause of tooth decay and cavities, but there are ways to cut down on sugar without giving up your favorite foods. Look for products labeled “sugar-free” or “no sugar added.” Other types of food that can cause cavities to include wine, tomatoes, and fruit juices.

Instead of drinking sugary sodas or sports drinks, try water with lemon or other fruit juices to add flavor. Limiting the amount of sugar in your diet reduces the chances of developing cavities. Always look for ways to reduce the amount of sugar you consume throughout the day and keep your smile healthy and cavity-free!
